Lean Legend to Open LEAN Educator Conference

Kicking off the Lean Educator Conference this year is John Shook. Shook is recognized as a true sensei who enthusiastically shares his knowledge and insights with the Lean Community as well as with those just beginning their lean journey. He is the co-author of “Learning to See,” author of “Managing to Learn” and numerous other articles. He has been interviewed about lean management by National Public Radio, Bloomberg News, The Wall Street Journal and numerous trade publications.

Lean Educator & Shingo Prize Winner Jean Cunningham

Jean Cunningham is a strong proponent of comprehensive lean education curriculum and is influencing the curriculum on several fronts. She and colleagues have started a non-profit targeted to send professor/student pairs to lean conferences, teaches in Fisher College’s Masters of Business Operational class and directs curriculum for the Lean Accounting Summit. She believes in the power that lean has on people and their careers.  

Jean brings corporate experience to her classroom teachings including (former) vice president and CFO at Lantech, Inc. and Marshfield Door Systems. Other associated roles include the former CFO at Stiles Associates, the premier executive retain search firm focused on lean, and the former CFO and a Director-at-Large for the Association for Manufacturing Excellence, a well known business association providing lean workshops and other industry events.

Based on her corporate lean journey, Jean published two books on the practical application of lean.  "Real Numbers" won the 2004 Shingo Prize for research and has become an essential lean accounting text. "Easier, Simpler, Faster" won the 2008 Shingo Prize for research and is recommended reading for lean IS/IT efforts. She contributed to "Lean Accounting," a collection of works by lean experts and is one of the founding and ongoing Thought Leaders for the Lean Accounting Summit.

Bill Owad, Sr. VP of Operational Excellence, Cardinal Health

William P. Owad, Jr. (Bill), senior vice president of Operational Excellence with Cardinal Health, is responsible for the development and implementation of an enterprise approach to operational excellence and the pursuit of becoming a “lean” enterprise. Owad also supports the extension of Operational Excellence external to Cardinal Health as the executive sponsor for the company’s relationships with the Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) Partner’s Program, the Healthcare Value Network (ThedaCare Center / LEI partnership), the Ohio State University Fisher College Center for Operational Excellence and the Conference Board Quality Council.

During his tenure, Owad served as the primary architect of the company’s enterprise-wide deployment of Lean Six Sigma, which, in three years, yielded significant improvements in customer loyalty, employee engagement, operational performance and working capital utilization.  This platform is now in the 9th year and is focused on fulfilling our vision of being a sustainable LEAN enterprise.

Currently, Owad serves as a board member for the following organizations; (1) The Partnership for Excellence, (2) the Mid-Ohio Foodbank and (3) The American Society of Hospital Pharmacists Foundation Board.
